When I first became a stay-at-home mom, I either skipped breakfast altogether, or I got up so late that I ate something really unhealthy. Even after I developed the habit of waking up early, I usually skipped breakfast. Then I discovered bullet proof coffee. Now, it is a key piece of my morning routine.

Benefits of Bulletproof Coffee

Most people think bulletproof coffee is only for people who follow a strict ketogenic diet. That is absolutely not true! I still eat carbohydrates and occasionally eat processed sugar, but I never skip my daily BPC.

Weight Loss

When I started drinking a daily BPC, I immediately noticed a difference in my appetite. I could fast until 11am or sometimes noon before feeling hungry. Soon, I could tell a difference in the way my clothes fit and began to see the scale moving.

No More Brain Fog

The most significant improvement, however, was how much better I felt, both physically and mentally.

Even after only one day drinking bulletproof coffee, I noticed a significant decrease in my mommy brain fog.  I could think more clearly and had a tremendous increase in my ability to focus.

Increased Energy

I have lots of energy to accomplish the daily tasks of keeping my house clean and homeschooling my children. I used to be completely exhausted after a long day of doctors appointments for our daughters or even a day at homeschool co-op. Now, I come home after those days and still have energy to spend some time with my children.

After seeing my results, my husband started drinking a daily BPC as well.  He experienced many of the same results, but also had less swelling and aching in his joints. In addition to the basic ingredients, my husband also adds collagen peptides to his BPC. You can find the specific brand he likes here.

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof coffee is hot coffee mixed with butter and coconut oil. Instead of plain butter and coconut oil, most people use MCT oil and Ghee. These are used to boost the fat content of the coffee. The high content of quality fat is not only good for the brain, but it keeps you full longer.

Bullet Proof Coffee Recipe

There is no absolute recipe for BPC, in fact, my husband and I make it completely differently. He prefers the basic three ingredient BPC with the addition of collagen powder, but I like to experiment.

I like to add things like stevia for a touch of sweetness, heavy whipping cream for a creamy flavor, and even some carob powder to give it a my BPC a chocolate flavor.

Experiment until you find the flavor you like as long as you maintain the basic idea of a high fat, no carb coffee drink.

Tips for Making Bullet Proof Coffee

After making a daily BPC for several years now, my husband and I have learned a few tips and hacks to make the process easier.

  • Pre-measure your ghee. When Ghee is in more liquid form, measure out by tablespoons in an ice cube tray, then chill until it is solid. Pope the pre-measured squares out and store in a plastic storage bag in the refridgerator.
  • Use a coffee grinder to grind your beans fresh every morning for a bolder coffee flavor.
  • Store all of your BPC ingredients in one place so they are easier to find in the morning.
  • Pack a small immersion blender or a baby formula mixer to have BPC when you travel.

  1. That sounds delicious. Coconut oil is an acquired taste, I’ve heard. We use it in our cooking in certain dishes. I am going to make BPC and try it. I usually have strong filter coffee with a little bit of milk, and without sugar. Wonderful to meet you, Melissa, that too over a new recipe for coffee! Love, Vidya (here via the June Bloggy Mom link up) Have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Vidya! The MCT oil is much better in the coffee since it is tasteless. Enjoy!

  2. I have never heard of bullet proof coffee and the effects sounds incredible! Thank you for sharing with us at Fiesta Friday!

  4. I made bullet proof coffee once with just butter. I didn’t froth it either. Didn’t care for it. I will try your suggestions, and I think the carob powder might be just the touch (or maybe a high quality dark cocoa powder). Will be trying this! Thanks for sharing with Fiesta Friday! (I’m needing to cut my morning brain fog…!)
