January Scripture Memory Cards

January is always a time when people seem to focus on new beginnings. The bible has a lot to say about starting over, new beginnings and abundance. Here are six scriptures to memorize in January to start your year off right.

Ephesians reminds us that starting something new is not just an act of developing a new habit, but it is actually stopping some old bad habits. Beginning new habits and starting fresh involves behaving in a new way or like a new person. For instance, you might want to develop a morning routine. In that case, you would want to put off the old habit of hitting the snooze button and live like a person who rises early and sets intention for her day. Ephesians 4:22-24

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Its easy to get caught up in thoughts of overwhelm and defeat. These thoughts can rob you of a new beginning. In those times, it is important to remember that God is for you! He has a plan for your life that you may not be able to see yet. Even if you cannot see your own plan for the new year or a new season of life, you can be confident that God has a plan, and it is good!

If you need help with daily or weekly planning, see this post about time blocking and how it can help you order your days.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

No matter the struggles of the previous year or season you are leaving behind, it is always best to start a new season or year with Thanksgiving. You can thank God for preserving you in the previous year and offer thanksgiving for what he will do in the new year.

Psalm 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Lamentations does not see like a book of the bible where we would look for encouragement in a season of new beginnings, but it is. Lamentations reminds us that the Lord’s mercies and compassions are new every morning and He is faithful! That is truly a reason to rejoice!

Lamentations 3:22-24

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

After a difficult season of pain, hurt and division, a reminder of love is truly what is needed. I need this verse when I am walking through difficult times. I need a constant reminder to love others even when I don’t agree with them. This is how we know that we are Jesus’ disciples!

John 13:34-35

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

A large part of moving forward in any situation is letting go of the past and the things of the past that can drag you down. You cannot move into a new season if you are carrying the dead weight of the previous one. It is time to allow Jesus to do a new thing in you!

Isaiah 43:18-19

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
