For this recipe you will start with a 7 quart slow cooker. You will need plenty of room for the biscuits to expand when cooking. I actually prefer to use my extra large 10 quart slow cooker and double the recipe! You will definitely want to use a larger slow cooker if you have a large family so you can double or triple the recipe.

Can you use canned chicken for chicken and dumplings?

To keep the prep for this recipe simple, I used canned chicken. Canned chicken is fully cooked so you do not have to worry about cooking times to make sure the chicken is fully cooked. This allows for less prep and faster cooking time. You can use fresh chicken for this recipe like Perdue Farms Diced Chicken, but you will need to adjust your cooking time to allow for the chicken to cook in the crock pot before adding the other ingredients.

Can I get fresh chicken delivered to my door?

You absolutely use a fresh chicken delivery service and get delicious, healthy chicken delivered right to your door to use in all of your crock pot chicken recipes. You can find all cuts and quantities of fresh chicken from boneless skinless breasts, to tenders shipped fresh to you.

Is Crockpot Chicken and dumplings a one pot meal?

To make this recipe, if you are using canned chicken, add all of the ingredients except the biscuits to the slow cooker. Stir them together well and cook on high for about two hours or until the mixture is so hot it is bubbling around the edges. This time may vary depending on your slow cooker.

How to do you make chicken and dumplings with canned biscuits?

For this recipe I actually prefer the cheaper small homestyle canned biscuits. They seem to hold together better than the flaky layers type of canned biscuits. Depending on how many dumplings you like in your chicken and dumplings, you can add more biscuits or less. My family likes lots of dumplings so we tend to add more. Four this particular recipe, we used four cans. Simply open the canned biscuits and cut each biscuit in half. Then, once your chicken mixture is boiling around the edges, cover the top of the mixture with the canned biscuits and cook for an additional hour. Depending on your slow cooker, you may need to cook the biscuits longer to make sure they are not doughy in the middle.

Chicken and dumplings is a favorite comfort food that is best served all by itself. Some people add some vegetables which make the meal a little more like a chicken pot pie without the crust.

You can store this meal in the refrigerator and serve reheated for two days. Note that the dumplings may get begin to fall apart, but the meal will still taste delicious.

Can you freeze slow cooker chicken and dumplings?

I always say that you can freeze any meal, but there are some that you really shouldn’t. This is one of those that does not serve well after being frozen. The dumplings become more like a mushy heavy sauce. It’s still edible, but it just doesn’t have the same traditional chicken and dumplings texture. If you want to make the chicken mixture ahead of time and freeze it in freezer bags, you can do that, just don’t freeze the biscuits.
