This cake is a favorite at family gatherings and parties of all kinds. One of my children even requests this cake for her birthday.

Butterfinger cake recipe ingredients

Before we dive into the recipe itself, let’s take a look at the main ingredients and some possible substitutions:

  • Devil’s Food Cake Mix (plus ingredients)
  • Caramel Ice Cream Topping
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Whipped Topping
  • Crushed Butterfinger Candy Bars

While the recipe calls for Butterfinger candy bars, you could easily switch it up with your favorite candy bar, such as Snickers or Kit Kats.

You could also make your own caramel sauce for added flavor and customization.

Another fun substitute is butterscotch ice cream topping instead of regular caramel sauce.

Another way to change up the flavor is to change the cake from devils food to a straight chocolate or even German chocolate.

There are so many combinations of cake, sauces and toppings that you can make this same cake many times over with a fresh taste.

How to make a Butterfinger CAke

This super sweet cake tastes like it takes a lot more effort and time than it actually does. The first step is to simply bake the devils food cake according to the box directions.

Once the cake is baked and cooled, prick the cake with a fork to make it more porous to allow the sauce to soak into the cake.

In a separate bowl combine caramel sauce and sweetened condensed milk and mix well until combined into a thick sauce.

Once the sauce is well mixed, pour the sauce directly over the pricked cake while sill in the pan. Then, place the cake in the fridge to continue cooling and allow the sauce to soak in well.

Make sure the sauce is well soaked into the cake so the cake will remain very moist.

Once the cake is well soaked in the sauce and completely cool, remove it from the fridge and top with a thick layer of whipped topping.

Next, crush three regular sized Butterfinger candy bars and sprinkle the crushed candy bars evenly across the whipped topping.

After spreading the crushed candy on top of the cake, cover the cake and return it to the refrigerator and keep cool until ready to serve.

Serve with a scoop or spatula and enjoy!

Can you freeze a Butterfinger cake?

You can freeze a the base of a butterfinger cake soaked in the caramel sauce, but it is best not to freeze the cake once the whipped topping and candy is added.

How long will a butterfinger cake last in the refrigerator?

The general rule for how long any dish will last in the refrigerator is not past the expiration date of any product included. A butterfinger cake, because it is soaked in the caramel sauce will usually maintain it’s consistency and taste right for about a week in the refrigerator.

A butterfinger cake is the perfect dish for summer picnics and even those winter parties. Kids and adults alike will love this rich delicious candy topped cake.
