When the weather forecast includes snow, my children can hardly wait to head to the grocery store to pick up all of the ingredients for our traditional snow day foods.

Our traditional snow day menu includes plenty of slow cooker hot chocolate with marsh mellows, a large pot of our favorite chili cooking on the stove, and of course, snow cream.

How to Gather Fresh Snow to Make Snow Cream

Gathering fresh snow to make snow ice cream is super simple. There are a couple of ways to get the job done efficiently.

Set an empty large bowl outside when the snow first starts to fall. Let the bowl fill up then bring it inside. Be sure the set your bowl away from your house and vehicles so nothing shields the bowl from the snowfall.

After the snow has fallen, take a large bowl and large serving spoon or spatula outside and skim the top layer off the snow and fill your bowl. Be sure to avoid dirty looking snow, and don’t dig too deep in the snow to fill your bowl.

Tips for Collecting Fresh Snow

  • Set out extra bowls and freeze the extra snow to make snow cream on another day.
  • Use large bowls with stacking lids to freeze extra snow cream.
  • Freeze extra snow in gallon freezer bags.
  • Be sure to pack your snow into your bowls well.

How to make snow cream from fresh snow?

After you have collected at least six cups of fresh snow, you can either make your snow cream immediately or store your snow in the freezer for later.

There is no exact recipe for making snow cream since every snow has a different consistency. I prefer the wet and snow that packs easily instead of the dryer, fluffy snow.

Must Have Ingredients

In addition to the fresh snow, there are a few ingredients you will need to make this delicious recipe. The following are links to the products on Amazon so you can have them delivered right to your door!

How do I get the right consistency for my snow cream?

There is really no exact science to making the snow cream since the consistency will depend on your snow.  If it is wet snow, you may need more snow to keep the creamy consistency.  If your snow is light and fluffy, you may need less snow.  Just keep mixing the ingredients until you get your desired taste and consistency.

Begin with your snow as a base in your bowl with a hand mixer or in a blender. First add your vanilla, then the condensed milk and the heavy whipping cream last.

Add the half at a time and mix well. Check your consistency, then add the remaining cream if necessary.

What if my snow cream is too runny?

If your snow cream consistency comes out too runny, you can always add a little more packed snow. If you don’t have any more snow, you can put the snow cream in the freezer for 20-30 minutes.

You can also substitute heavy cream powder to get that same creamy taste and consistency without your snow cream being runny. You can also use the heavy cream powder to make some fresh whipped cream to top your snow cream.

I have been waiting for years to make this and FINALLY we have snow. Thank you for making the kids very happy they loved making it and eating it even more. For my daughter though – we had to make it pink! Pink Snow Ice Cream! It was a hit though and now they can’t wait for it to snow again so we can make some more.
